FAQ

Do you teach absolute beginners?

Yes I do! A private lesson can be just the thing if you don't want to learn in a group with people you don't know. The lesson will be tailored to your pace and learning style. I really enjoy working with nervous paddlers and would encourage anyone who is unsure about trying paddleboarding to come and have a go! I will always create a safe space for you free from judgement or negativity.

What qualifications do you hold?

I hold a Level 3 SUP Coach Qualification from the British Canoeing Awarding Body. British Canoeing is the National Governing Body for SUP in England and their qualifications are Ofqual regulated. I also hold certificates covering Safety & Rescue Training, First Aid, Safeguarding, Risk Assessing and Leadership. I am approveded to deliver British Canoeing's Sup Safer Course and Performance Awards. As a British Canoeing coach, I am required to keep my training up to date and am comitted to continuous professional development.

Do you offer safety and rescue training?

I run the British Canoeing SUP Safer course which is a 4 hr practical course covering all aspects of SUP safety and rescue techniques. On successsful completion, you will receive a certificate from the British Canoeing Awarding Body  which can be useful if you wish to hire paddleboards in the future or if you decide to gain further qualifications. The course will teach you everything you need to stay safe when paddling at inland locations.

Do you teach more experienced paddlers?

Yes, I can offer more technical sessions including the analysis of video footage to help improve technique. I can also guide experienced paddlers on routes along the Thames.

What board should I buy?

I recommend that you have a lesson and try several boards before you buy one. Always buy from a specialist retailer who  will let you demo different boards and paddles and advise you on the best board for the type of paddling you will be doing. I personally use Quroc and Starboard boards and paddles.

Where do the lessons take place?

Most lessons take place on the river Thames in and around Maidenhead. The  exact location may depend on the type of session and could be determined by weather and/or water conditions.

Can I rent equipment?

I only rent equipment to those participating in one of my sessions.

Do you offer lessons all year round?

Beginner sessions run from the Spring until early Autumn. Coaching for intermediate paddlers with suitable clothing runs all year round, weather permitting.

What should I wear to a lesson?

The answer depends on the weather and the time of year. All clothing should be synthetic. Footwear is advisable to walk to the launch point. A buoyancy aid is mandatory. Wetsuits are generally not suitable in Summer months as it's easy to overheat. For Winter sessions, specialist clothing is essential. If you're unsure, just ask!

Do you offer group lessons?

Yes! I can offer group lessons for paddlers bringing their own equipment. A selection of my boards can be made available to use on sessions. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.
